Although little publicized, there are many refineries in Brazil and few people know about them. Some even produce rare petroleum derivatives, others are so colossal that they are responsible for almost 80% of national inputs. Now with a new rush to drain pre-salt production from deposits in the Santos Basin, some units will start resuming work or increase the production rate of existing refineries.
First watch the video below on how the oil refining process works and then learn which and where the refineries in Brazil are located.
RNEST (Abreu e Lima Refinery) is located in the Suape Port Industrial Complex, at a distance of about 45 km from Recife-PE. It can operate independently in refining systems, and can use different productivity systems for each type of oil. For example: LPG, coke, naphtha, Diesel S-10 and fuel oil.

The Potiguar Clara Camarão refinery installed in Rio Grande do Norte is the only one that is self-sufficient because it is able to produce all petroleum derivatives and their most primary form. Its main highlights since 2010 is the production of gasoline for automobiles, kerosene for aircraft and petrochemical naphtha. Its current hydrocarbon processing capacity is 6,000 cubic meters of derivatives per day.

Although the works have been paralyzed since 2015 with 85% of the works completed, Comperj will be taken over by a new company from July 2017. The objective will be to drain the pre-salt production and this petrochemical complex located in the city of Itaboraí-RJ, is in a strategic point. It will process about 165 thousand barrels of crude oil per day and its derivatives will be the most diverse, including cooking gas, gasoline, diesel and other products.

RLAM (Landulpho Alves Refinery) is special because it was the national pioneer in Brazilian refining and began in 1950. Known as the largest petrochemical complex on the south side of the planet, this refinery is located in Camaçari, in the Recôncavo region of Bahia. In addition to refining almost all types of oil, this refinery is the only one capable of producing a kind of paraffin used in chocolates, chewing gum and detergents. Its processing capacity is around 323,000 barrels per day.

The Capuava Refinery (Recap) is located in the metropolis of São Paulo and produces around 30% of its fuel for its own consumption. Due to logistical issues and to obtain raw materials, many industrial companies ended up installing themselves near this refinery. This cluster of industries there is now called the Grande ABC Petrochemical Complex. Recapa processes around 8,500 m³ of oil daily and produces a lot of commercial derivatives such as cooking gas and automotive fuels.
